How to Cure My Child’s Bad Breath
April 27, 2022 8:42 pmDoes your child get teased at school for having “stinky dog breath” or “foul dragon breath”? We never want children to be bullied, especially for treatable dental health problems! As there are various possible reasons why your child is experiencing bad breath, there are many different ways to try and fix the situation. Here are some potential solutions:
Assess Their Dental Hygiene Routine
The first thing you should try is to evaluate your child’s dental hygiene routine. They should be brushing their teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time, brushing their tongue, and flossing every day. These simple habits will prevent bad bacteria from building up in their mouth. If they are skipping a brushing session before bed, encourage them to take care of their oral hygiene before they get drowsy. And if they aren’t brushing long enough, get them an electric toothbrush with a built-in 2-minute timer.
Increase Their Water Intake
When someone is dehydrated, it can result in dry mouth and subsequent bad breath. This is because there’s not enough saliva production to rinse away odor-causing bacteria. Make sure your child is getting plenty of water to drink throughout the day. Teach them to limit sugary drinks, like juice and soda, that can make bad breath even worse.
Consult Their Pediatrician & Dentist
Sometimes bad breath is a result of an underlying medical condition or a medication. Consulting with several healthcare professionals and examining the issue from various angles can help you better pinpoint what is causing your child’s bad breath.
