How to Care for Your Smile with Invisalign

If you have mild to moderate bite issues or crooked teeth, Invisalign® clear aligner therapy is a great alternative to traditional metal braces for teenagers and adults.

At Tots and Teens Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we proudly offer Invisalign as one of our orthodontic treatment options. Here’s how Invisalign works, and how you can care for your smile during your treatment.

What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign is clear aligner therapy, which means it utilizes comfortable, removable trays in the shape of your teeth to gently shift your teeth into straighter positions over time.

To receive Invisalign, you will first have a consultation with our team to determine whether it’s a good option for your orthodontic needs. After taking impressions of your teeth, computer-generated aligner designs can be created for your smile. You will receive new aligners every two weeks to drive your treatment plan forward. It’s important to wear your aligners at least 20-22 hours a day to make sure you’re staying on track.

Typically, Invisalign clear aligner therapy lasts anywhere from a year to 18 months, depending on your individual treatment plan.

What Can Invisalign Fix?

Invisalign can correct mild to moderate alignment issues like crooked teeth, spacing and gaps, crowding, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. Given that the aligners are removable, Invisalign is best for adult and teenage patients who can remember to wear their aligners regularly, keep them clean, and not lose them.

How to Care for Your Smile with Invisalign

Wear your aligners throughout the day and night for maximum efficacy, removing them when you’re eating, drinking anything other than water, and cleaning your teeth. Since Invisalign aligners are removable, you can brush and floss your teeth like normal.

However, there are additional steps you need to take. For example, you should rinse your aligners whenever you take them out and put them back in your mouth. They also need to be cleaned every day with mild dish soap and regularly soaked in a denture or retainer cleanser. In addition, brush your teeth after eating or drinking anything other than water before putting your aligners back in. Otherwise, you increase your risk of decay decay, bad breath, and gum disease. Your trays can also become discolored if your teeth aren’t clean when you put them back in.
